The Beautiful refreshing face, unmeasurable talent and 5′6″ tall babe’s real name is “Aka Tabassum” born on 4th November. Mother and fathers names are “Rizwana” and “Jamal Hashmi”. Her Sister “Farha” is a well known bollywood actress.
Tabu actually reached the audience as the ‘Ruk ruk’ girl in Vijaypath
Tabu started her film career as a child artiste for Dev Anand?s Hum Naujawan and since she wasn’t the lead actress, Tabu gained little mileage from it. The 1st film she signed on as lead actress was Prem, but finally, Pehla Pehla Pyar released first and launched her as leading lady. Though about the first few films Tabu signed on the less said, the better, she exhibited a marked acting talent. It took her about two years to go past the run-of-the mill roles and enter more serious spheres of acting, but in her formative years as an actress, she learn the Hindi film basics inside out.
Comic roles with the likes of Govinda and Rishi Kapoor were complemented by more sober performances opposite Ajay Devgan and Sunny Deol. The period when Tabu fully acquainted herself with commercial cinema was pivotal, because it was this point on that she acquired the liberty to choose her own scripts. Once established as a good actress (and a reliable draw at the box-office), Tabu started experimenting.
Tabu entered alternative cinema in steps. She began with Kala-Pani, a South-produced film about the freedom movement and followed it up with another good performance in Kadalan Desam, another Tamil blockbuster.
Tabu has mainly acted in Hindi films, though she has also starred in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali language films, as well as one American film. She has won the National Film Award for Best Actress twice, and she holds the record for the most wins of Filmfare’s Critics Award for Best Female Performer, with four.
Despite a few exceptions, Tabu is best-known for acting in artistic, low-budget films that go on to garner more critical appreciation than substantial box office figures.
Her appearances in commercially successful films were few, and her parts in these films were small, such as Border (1997), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Biwi No.1 and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999). Her most notable performances include Maachis (1996), Virasat (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Astitva (2000), Chandni Bar (2001), Maqbool (2003) and Cheeni Kum (2007), ‘Toh Baat Pakki’(2010). Her leading role in Mira Nair’s American film The Namesake also drew major praise.
Known to be selective about her film roles, she has said, “I do films which move me and most of all, the unit and the director should appeal to me.”
Tabu always likes to attempt characters very different from mainstream like her portrayal of a bar girl in Chandni Bar.
Today, she is very choosy about her films and insists on doing few, but select films every year. She has already carved a niche for herself in the Indian film industry as an actress to be taken very seriously. And if the kind of work she has come up with is any indication of things to come, we have a lot more of Tabu to look forward to.
