Mumbai: Former Miss World turned Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is pregnant, her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan has revealed.

"NEWS NEWS NEWS !! I AM GOING TO BECOME A GRANDFATHER .. AISHWARYA EXPECTING .. SO HAPPY AND THRILLED !!!," the veteran megastar wrote on his Twitter account late on Tuesday.

Aishwarya Rai, 37, married Bachchan's actor son, Abhishek, 35, in April 2007.

The child will be their first and comes after weeks of media speculation in Indian gossip columns about the actress' fluctuating weight.

Bachchan Senior later said on the micro-blogging site that he was "overwhelmed" with the response to the news from followers and had received 2,843 Tweets of congratulation in just half an hour.

The pregnancy was confirmed earlier in the day, he wrote on his blog, bigb.bigadda.com, early Wednesday, adding: "There is joy and happiness around us," he added.

There was no immediate indication when the baby was due. The Bachchans - Amitabh, his actress wife Jaya, Aishwarya and Abhishek - are Bollywood's "first family" and have a fanatical following in India and around the world. His daughter, Shweta Nanda, has two children.

It’s love triangles aplenty, as Bollywood appears to have gone flirt-fest crazy after we spotted Ranbir Kapoor’s latest arm candy, Angela Jonsson, hitting on Kapoor’s ex-lover Deepika Padukone’s current squeeze, Siddharth Mallya, (phew!) at actress Shilpa Shetty’s birthday bash a few days ago. Party peeps revealed that Angela had hit the celeb-filled bash with Prateik and some pals, but headed straight for Sid the minute she saw him.

“Angela knows Sid as she had modelled for his company’s calendar. So, while she giggled the night away, he was all ears,” revealed our party spy.

When Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif declared to tabloid!: "Dress for comfort on a long-haul flight, it doesn't matter how you look," you might be tempted to think that she is one of those stars who wouldn't care less if she was caught without make-up.

But her actions spoke louder than her words. In the midst of our interview on Thursday in Dubai, we were rudely interrupted by her hairdresser who scampered next to her to arrange her already perfect curls cascading down her shoulder. Our photographer was also given a stern instruction only to take pictures above the waist as the Raajneeti star was in her ballerina pumps. So much for her "it doesn't matter how you look" mantra.

But that aside, the brand ambassador for Etihad Airways said all the right things and drummed up enough emotion on topics that excited her. Surprisingly, the face of a UAE airline was reluctant about speaking about her best or worst holiday experience but was far more articulate when it came to being Bollywood's most searched celebrity on the internet [her name throws up a whopping 41,500,000 results on Google, previous top hit Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's name generates only 40,300,000 results].

"I think it's fun. Because, it means that people are interested in you. It's a sign that people will come and see your work. No matter how they term it - say cute, attractive or sexy. As long as I have audience acceptance, I am happy with it," said Kaif.

The 26-year-old actress, who made her Bollywood debut in the box-office debacle Boom in 2003, now has several blockbusters under her belt, including Welcome, Singh Is Kinng and Raajneeti. In less than a decade, this British-Asian actress, who started off as a pretty face with anglicised Hindi, is now being featured prominently in the Best Actress Award categories.

Excerpts from the interview:

Congratulations are in order. How does it feel to be nominated in the Best Actress category for Raajneeti at the IIFA (Indian International Film Awards) this year?

Actually, I haven't seen the nominations. Thank you for giving me the good news. It's very nice to know that the film was appreciated. It's equally amazing to know that a film of that genre [political thriller] was accepted. Even the producers didn't expect it to be a commercial success. That's a great thing.

Are you turning to more serious roles after its success?

I love all my films. I am extremely attached to them and I stand by them. My rule of thumb is if the audience has accepted a film, I don't think there's any need for discussion after that, at least not in my head.

After that, I don't look at each review or statement made about it. At the end of the day, there will be thousands of opinions since everybody is free to make it. As long as my audience accepts my films, my job is done. I remember when I took on New York, all the industry people thought it would go nowhere. But it did.

Your next film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is creating quite a buzz. What's it about?

Zindagi is one of those films like my Raajneeti or New York. It's in a different space and is not your typical comedy like Singh Is Kingg, Welcome or Ready. It's a film in which the audience has to just grab on to it and go along with it. It has an engaging story. I just hope that it will connect to the youth in a big way like Dil Chahta Hai. It has the same potential because it captures a phase in your life filled with uncertainties, that phase where there's a lot of pressure from the parents' end or pressure to conform to what the society expects of you. It talks about doing what your heart wants as opposed to what's expected of you. And I believe if that clicks with the audience, the film will be very successful in its own right.

Is there an item song like Sheila Ki Jawani (her saucy number from her latest film Tees Maar Khan) in it?

No. There's no Sheila in Zindagi because if there was an item song in every film I did, Sheila wouldn't have been such a big phenomenon. My biggest challenge is to do something different in every film. It's such a tough call as an actress. Yes, I am doing a film like My Brother Ki Dulhan, which has five songs and lots of dancing. It's your full-on commercial film, but if you take that formula again and again, then I am just opting for the easy route. That's not done.

What attracts you to a role?

As long as a film is intriguing, I will do the role. I don't know if you will term Raajneeti as a serious role, but I found it engaging. I have no interest in doing a film that is serious and that critics will like.

How does it feel to top the World's Sexiest Woman polls (FHM India magazine) and to be one of the most searched celebrities in the world?

I think it's just fun. It's similar to the feeling you get when your film or advertisement does well. It just shows acceptance in your work. It also means that people are interested in you and it's a sign that they will come and see your films. It just shows they like no matter how they term it say cute, attractive or sexy.

Do you think you are a misunderstood celebrity? (Rumour has it that she is not Miss Popular among her Bollywood peers.)

Apart from one or two incidents, I don't generally see anything of that sort. Yes, I read everything that's written about me. [Shrugs].

Are you happy with the progress you have made in Bollywood?

I can't complain. If anybody was in my place and complained, that would be very sad and ungrateful. I am extremely thankful but I can't afford to be complacent. Knowing that there are lot of filmmakers putting a lot of faith in me with different kinds of films, is my focus.

Hollywood Actress Patricia Heaton profile

Patricia Helen Heaton is one of the few Hollywood conservatives who is absolutely candid about her political positions. The former Everybody Loves Raymond star is honorary chair of the national pro-life organization, Feminists for Life and in 2006, she appeared in an ad opposing embryonic stem cell research. The ad caused a public outcry when it appeared during Game 4 of the World Series (details below). Despite her otherwise socially conservative beliefs, she supports gay rights and birth control. A Republican, she supported John McCain for president in 2008 and Sarah Palin for vice president.

Early Life:
A Profile of Conservative Hollywood Actress Patricia Heaton

Heaton was born on March 4, 1958 in Bay Village, Ohio, the daughter of Pat and Chuck Heaton. She was raised Catholic and attended Mass with her parents every day. Her father was a sports writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, helping to provide her with insight in her later role as Debra Barone, wife Ray Barone, a sports writer for the Long Island newspaper, Newsday. She graduated from Bay High School in Ohio and was a singer in the choir. She also performed in the Stage Band and was a member of the Rockettes Drill Team with the Bay Rockets' Marching Band.

College and Stage Performances:

Heaton graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater from Ohio State University, where she was a sister in the Delta Gamma sorority. While studying acting in New York, Heaton modeled shoes before making her Broadway debut in the gospel musical Don't Get God Started. She and her fellow students then formed Stage Three, an acting company that produced plays Off-Broadway. As a member of the acting company, she and her fellow performers took the production, The Johnstown Vindicator, to Los Angeles, and Heaton's performance quickly caught the eyes of casting directors.

Early Television & Film Appearances:

Her first recurring role was in the 1987 show, Thirtysomething. In 1990, she auditioned for the role of Elaine on the hit comedy Seinfeld. In 1992, she was cast as the the producer/daughter in the television series "Room for Two," and in 1994, she starred in the series Someone Like Me. In 1995, she had a regular roles in CBS's Women of the House, and in 1997, she starred in the highly rated CBS TV movie Miracle in the Woods with Della Reese. Her feature film credits include Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992), Beethoven (1992), The New Age (1994) and Space Jam (1996).

Everybody Loves Raymond:

When Heaton auditioned for the role of Debra Barone in 1996, she was reportedly the only actor willing to kiss Ray Ramano during the takes. Although CBS executives had another actress in mind, Heaton most closely represented Romano's vision of the character, and producers supported him. Thus, Heaton was cast as the show's female lead. On the set of the show, she and liberal actor Peter Boyle often would have political discussions. The conversations were never mean-spirited, and Heaton was devastated when Boyle died in 2006.

Emmy Awards:

For her role in Everybody Loves Raymond, Heaton won two Emmys and was nominated for five more for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Role." Her first win came in 2000 after her second nomination for the episode "Bad Moon Rising," and her second victory came a year later for the episode "The Canister." an Emmy for Leading Actress in a Comedy Series. She was nominated for a l999 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and won the l998-99 Viewers for Quality Television Best Actress in a Quality Comedy Award.

Life After Raymond:

In 2007, Heaton was cast alongside fellow conservative Kelsey Grammar in Back to You, a show about a local television news affiliate in suburban Pittsburgh. The show was canceled after 17 episodes. Heaton subsequently returned to the stage, performing in The Scene, with co-star Tony Shalhoub. In November 2008, it was revealed that producers were planning to bring Heaton back to prime time TV, casting her as a female lead in the comedy pilot The Middle, which was scheduled to begin filming in 2009 and revolves around a Midwestern family with three children.

2006 Embryonic Stem Cell Ad:

Heaton became the subject of a Hollywood backlash after appearing in a 2006 advertisement in opposition to embryonic stem cell research. The ad appeared shortly after Michael J. Fox appeared in an ad supporting a bill sponsored by then-House Rep. Claire McCaskill, which would have permitted federal funding for the research (the bill was vetoed by President Bush). When initially approached Heaton had no desire to appear in the ad and had no idea it would run so closely after Fox's, let alone in Game 4 of the World Series. She later apologized to a gracious Fox, but still suffered ridicule by Hollywood's establishment.

Charity Work:

Besides Feminists for Life and the embryonic stem cell ad, Heaton was an outspoken opponent of euthanasia during the Terri Schiavo case. She has since done advocacy for other organizations including Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate world hunger, and World Vision, a Christian relief and development organization that seeks to prevent the underlying causes of poverty.

Family Life:

Heaton was married to British actor David Hunt in 1990 and they have four sons. The family splits time between homes in Los Angeles and England, where they own a country estate. In 2002, she published a book about her life, Motherhood and Hollywood: How to Get a Job Like Mine. In it, she describes moving from Roman Catholicism to the more socially acceptable Presbyterianism. Although she and her family attend an Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Heaton claims she is still a Catholic.

She quotes “It happened very strangely and was almost like destiny. I was in the middle of my 12th exams when I had appeared on the cover of a tourism book. Mohanlal saw the picture and I got a call from the film’s director. He talked to me and was convinced I was the one for the role. Everything happened very quickly”.

She has never done playback singing for her native movies but for Ala Modalaindi she sang two beautiful numbers. The makers actually wanted her for one song but after seeing how beautiful her voice was, they made her croon for the second. The curly haired actress is starring with Nani in the film directed by Nandini Reddy on Sri Ranjit Movies banner. KL Damodar Prasad is the producer.
